Body Ph – A Vital Indicator Of Your Health, And Of Your Resistance To Disease.
Keeping your body pH in the right range is one of the most important factors in looking after your health.
PH is a measure of acidity or alkalinity – a number between 1 and 14, where 1 is most acid and 14 is most alkaline. 7 is neutral.
Your body pH is normally between 7.35 and 7.45 – that is, slightly alkaline. If it gets any higher or lower this quickly leads to loss of consciousness and death.
While you can live with a blood pH as low as 7.35, this is really too acidic for optimal health. Between 7.4 and 7.5 is best.
It’s not difficult to maintain the right blood pH – your body does most of the work without you thinking about it.
The normal processes of living create acidic wastes. Some of these can be excreted; some of the acid is used in the stomach for digestion. The rest has to be neutralised by alkalising minerals - mainly calcium, potassium, magnesium and sodium.
Ideally these should come from your food. Everything you eat can leave you more alkaline or more acid. Alkalizing foods are those that supply plenty of the alkalizing minerals. Digestion of proteins, fats and starches in general leave acid waste.
Nearly all fruits and vegetables are alkalising. The ancient grains quinoa and millet are also alkalizing, but most grains are acidifying. Protein foods such as meat, fish and eggs, and most fats and oils are acid forming.
When you don’t eat enough alkalizing foods, your body doesn’t give up – it can’t, or you’d soon be dead – it takes minerals from your bones and teeth to neutralise the acids. This means that the longer you go without eating enough of the right foods, the weaker your teeth and bones become – leading to osteoporosis, arthritis and weak teeth.
Another reason for getting your blood ph right is that germs of all sorts prefer a more acidic environment. Bacteria, viruses and fungus thrive when your blood pH tends to the acid end of the normal range. It’s then much harder for your immune system to keep them under control.
So, for the sake of your bones and teeth, and to avoid illness, make alkalizing foods a regular part of your diet, and cut down on the acidifying ones.
